Biography:

     John has been at Kennedy since 2004 where he conducts the Concert Band, Symphonic Winds, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Marching Band, and the Pep Band. He grew up in Alexandria, MN, where he enjoyed all aspects of the band program, including being selected to the McDonald’s All-American High School Marching Band. At Gustavus, he majored in Saxophone Performance, and then studied at the National Conservatory in Bordeaux, France. After returning to the States, Mr. Engebretson attended Northwestern University and earned a Master’s Degree in Saxophone Performance, followed by another Master’s Degree in Music Education.
      Following teaching stints in Chaska, Eden Prairie, and Red Wing, John landed at Kennedy, where he has had the time of his life teaching Bloomington’s finest students. In addition to teaching at Kennedy, he is the saxophone instructor at Gustavus, which gives him another opportunity to teach and perform on his primary instrument, the saxophone.
