To the Editor,
Thanks to the generosity and tremendous support of our community, six fifth graders from Westwood Elementary, Molly Deering, Rachel Tucker, Tim Larson, Cory Frey, Tyler Johnson, Roz Paradis and third grader Jake Johnson competed in the Destination Imagination Global Finals May 23-May 27 in Knoxville, Tenn. Coaches Becky Frey and Karen Johnson and several parents accompanied them on this once-in-a-lifetime educational experience.
I am very happy and proud to announce that Westwood’s Team Whatever placed 11th out of 77 teams in their division! This was an incredible achievement against teams of students from across the United States and around the globe.
This learning experience took an extraordinary team effort and the talents of our parents who were so remarkable in their quest to raise money for these students. They dug up their gardens and raised $1,000 in plant sales, cleaned out their homes for a garage sale that provided $2,500 and generated donations from personal friends and relatives—everyone went all out for these kids.
Businesses and organizations in Bloomington and neighboring communities contributed abundantly to raise nearly $9,000 to cover the travel expenses for the team and coaches.
I must acknowledge our generous donors: the Education Foundation of Bloomington, Travelers Insurance, Andre Thibault of Richfield/Bloomington Credit Union, the Diversity and Gifted/ Talented Departments of Bloomington Public Schools, Tiffany and Co. at the Galleria, Deborah Eckland of Goetz & Eckland, Westwood PTA and over 30 staff and community members. We simply couldn’t have done it without your support and encouragement!
On behalf of Team Whatever, the Bloomington Gifted/Talented program and Westwood Elementary, thank you!
