Three Jefferson Students Place First at Speech Tournament
The Bloomington Jefferson speech team hosted its 37th Annual Speech Tournament on Saturday, March 3 and three Bloomington champions emerged.
Seniors Marcus Mann and Jane Meyer won impromptu speaking and humorous, respectively. Junior Madison Rubenstein won drama with perfect scores of 1,100, 1,100 and 1,100.
Several Jefferson students had top ten finishes. Seniors Spencer Cross and Marcus Mann placed fourth in duo interpretation and Freshman Scott Hart placed fourth in humorous. Sophomore Mariah Helgeson placed fifth in extemporaneous speaking and Junior Kate Wutchiett placed ninth in original oratory.
Jefferson dominated the impromptu category, winning six of the top ten spots. Besides Mann as champion, other Jefferson winners in impromptu were Mariah Helgeson, third; Spencer Cross, fourth; Sophomore Bridget Hart, fifth; Junior Tenzin Tseky, seventh; and
Kate Wutchiett, tenth.
Over 550 students from 28 schools competed at the tournament. Fourteen members of the Jefferson speech team will participate in the Southern Minnesota National Forensics League District Tournament Friday-Saturday, March 9-10 at Eagan High School. The top speakers in each category with qualify for the N.F.L. National Tournament in June in Witchita, Kansas.
