Governor Pawlenty proclaims Oct. 11 thinkPINKkids Day
Encourages participation in 5K Walk event at MOA
Sept. 29, 2009
Governor Tim Pawlenty has proclaimed Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, to be thinkPINKkids Day, and is encouraging all Minnesotans to participate in the day’s special events to help raise awareness and funding for finding a cure for breast cancer.
The Bloomington Board of Education and Bloomington City Council also issued a joint proclamation recognizing the 2nd Annual thinkPINKKids Day 5K Walk and Breast Cancer Awareness Celebration, which takes place at the Mall of America.
In addition to the 5K walk inside the sprawling complex, a special ceremony following the walk will feature Nashville singer/songwriters Kyle Jacobs and Ben Glover.
Jacobs, a Bloomington native and Kennedy High School graduate, will perform “More Than A Memory,” a song he penned for Garth Brooks in 2007. The song debuted at No. 1 and became the fastest rising single in the history of country music. He also has a song on Tim McGraw’s soon-to-be-released album, Southern Voice. Glover, who recorded a top selling Christian album in 2001, will join Jacobs on stage to perform a number of songs.
This year’s event will also feature Twins mascot T.C. Bear, Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders, Timberwolves dancers, the Jefferson High School drumline, and musical performances by local bands, Crashing Daylight and 36 Sunrise.
Last year, the American Cancer Society awarded a major research grant to the University of Minnesota as part of a $30,000 fund-raising effort by Bloomington students and the thinkPINKkids Day event, which had 1,500 participants. The students and event organizers are hoping this year’s event, which was moved to a weekend date in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will attract thousands to the walk and celebration.
