Normandale Hills students exceed reading challenge
Feb. 23, 2010
Results from Normandale Hills Elementary School’s inaugural Read-A-Thon defied the economic climate and exceeded expectations by raising $17,000 for programs and services that directly benefit students. That’s over $12,000 more than the goal set for the two-week event, according to Normandale Hills PTA, which organized the event.
Students, staff and parents celebrated the accomplishment this week at a special school assembly where the results were announced. Culver’s of Bloomington rewarded the students’ efforts by providing ice cream for the entire school.
The Read-A-Thon ran from Feb. 1-14, and was held to raise money and strengthen students’ literacy skills. Some 55 percent of the school’s student body participated and cumulatively read 138,325 minutes or 2,305 hours for the two-week period.
“It is so exciting to see our school and local community come together to support the needs of students and enhance our literacy efforts,” said Principal Andy Vollmuth.
Other business and community partners contributing to the success of the program included Carbone’s Pizza, Creative Lounge, Cold Stone Creamery, Davanni’s Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, Edition III, Frankie’s Pizza, Fuddruckers, Half Price Books, McDonald’s, Nick-N-Willys, Papa John’s Pizza, Pearson VUE, Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, Pizza Hut, and Wendy’s.
