Normandale Hills Elementary to host inaugural read-a-thon
Proceeds to benefit programs, services for students Jan. 25, 2010
Bloomington’s Normandale Hills Elementary School will host its first-ever read-a-thon from Feb. 1-14 to benefit the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, which supports essential programs and services for students.
As is the case with many public schools during the economic downturn, Normandale Hills Elementary PTA faces budgetary constraints. Schools and PTAs across Minnesota are making tough decisions about programs and services that directly benefit students. However, the Normandale Hills PTA seeks to address some financial constraints with additional fundraising and engaging the support of the community.
“We hope by implementing the Normandale Hills Read-A-Thon developed by our parents, we can accomplish two goals: meet our funding needs without having to cut programs, and enrich literacy at the same time,” said Julie Dietrich, PTA president.
The financial goal of the project is to raise between $5,000-$7,000, while the academic goal is to encourage students to read and improve literacy skills. Students are encouraged to read 117,117 minutes (or 1,952 hours). Students will request the support of individual sponsors for each minute read. All support of the Normandale Hills Read-A-Thon is 100 percent tax-deductible.
Community businesses supporting the project include: Culvers of Bloomington, Frankie’s Pizza, Carbone’s, Nick & Willy’s Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, Papa Johns, Perkins, Davanni’s, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Cold Stone Creamery, Fuddruckers, Pizza Hut, Pearson Vue, Perkins Restaurant, and Half Price Books.
