Lockheed Martin provides $24,000 in grants to Bloomington schools

Feb. 8, 2010

Lockheed Martin has awarded $24,000 in grants to six Bloomington schools as part of the company’s education initiative Engineers in the Classroom.

Bloomington Public Schools receiving grant monies include Jefferson and Kennedy high schools, $8,000 each; Olson, Oak Grove and Valley View middle schools, $2,000 each; and Poplar Bridge Elementary School, $2,000. Grant recipients will use the funds to support the pre-engineer curriculum Project Lead the Way in their school, as well as a STEM-focused extra-curricular activity.

Lockheed Martin’s Engineers in the Classroom initiative supplements K-12 studies by offering hands-on classroom activities and student lessons that reinforce the engineering principals taught through Project Lead the Way courses, said Rick Udicious, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s facility in Eagan. Serving as mentors and role models for students and advisors to teachers, Lockheed Martin engineers visit classrooms as guest lecturers and serve as coaches for teams that have their focus in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

“Our partnership with Lockheed Martin has enriched student engagement and learning in engineering classes,” said Debbie Belfry, the district’s career development coordinator. “Having opportunities that bring engineers into the classroom and offering programs for students interested in engineering have been a wonderful addition to our schools.”
