Hillcrest Community, Oak Grove Elementary schools named
Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Chad Colby makes the announcement
that Hillcrest Community School has earned the Blue Ribbon School
of Excellence designation to the delight of Superintendent Les Fujitake
and Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead.
Bloomington Public Schools received a double dose of recognition today when two of its elementary schools were named Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. The award recognizes significant progress the schools have made under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Education Chad Colby made the announcement and presented a certificate to the principals at Hillcrest Community School and Oak Grove Elementary School in special assemblies for students, staff, parents and community members. The schools will be formally recognized for their academic achievements at a Washington D.C. event next month.
Both schools also received an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol earlier this week in honor of being named Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. The flags were gifts from Congressman Jim Ramstad.
Superintendent Les Fujitake said the awards represent the wonderful accomplishments of students and staff at the two schools, and the commitment of parents and the community.
"It is such an honor to pay tribute to these schools. This designation is a reward for your dedication and commitment to teaching and learning, and your hard work to excel," said Fujitake.
Minnesota Commissioner of Education Alice Seagren and Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead, parents of former Hillcrest students, were on hand for the announcements and praised the schools as wonderful places for children to learn.
"We know the value good schools bring to a community and neighborhood," said Winstead. "It is why we, as a city and a diverse community of people, embrace our schools as vital to the economic well being and stability of Bloomington."
Hillcrest and Oak Grove were two of the eight Minnesota schools and among the 237 schools across the country to earn the special designation this year.
This is the second time Hillcrest has been named a Blue Ribbon school, having earned the recognition in 1997. Seven of Bloomington's 15 public schools have now earned the national Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence designation since the U.S. Department of Education began recognizing outstanding schools in 1982.
Other Bloomington schools to earn the honor include, Normandale Hills Elementary (2004), Hillcrest Community (1997), Oak Grove Intermediate (1994), Oak Grove Junior High (1987), Poplar Bridge Elementary (1986), and Kennedy High School (1985).
Other guests in attendance today included representatives from Senator Norm Coleman and Senator Amy Klobuchar's offices.
