Seven Bloomington Schools earn five stars in Reading, Math

The Bloomington School District met state and national requirements for every subject at every grade level through the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment tests.

Also, all Bloomington Schools in the District met the No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress requirements in Math. In Reading, 14 schools met AYP requirements. Only one category of students at Kennedy High Schools did not meet the AYP standards in Reading. All other Kennedy students met the requirements.

Nine of these individual schools received five stars in either Math, Reading or both subject areas. Last year, only one Bloomington school received five stars.

"We need to congratulate our staff and students," said Dr. Gary Prest, Superintendent of Schools. "This places Bloomington Public Schools in the top echelon of school districts in the state."

Seven Bloomington Public Schools received five stars in both Reading and Math and two additional schools received one five-star rating in either Reading or Math.

Schools receive a state report card for their MCA testing performance with five stars being the highest a school can receive. Washburn, Hillcrest Community, Hubert Olson Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, Normandale Hills, Ridgeview and Jefferson High School all received five stars in both Reading and Math. Olson Middle School received five stars in Reading and four stars in Math. Poplar Bridge received five stars in Math and four stars in Reading. Jefferson High, Oak Grove Middle and Valley View Elementary Schools all improved enough to be removed from the 2004 list of underperforming schools.

This is an improvement over the 2004 and 2003 results. In 2004, Ridgeview was the only school to achieve five stars. In 2003, Normandale Hills and Hubert Olson Elementary were the only schools to receive five stars.

Schools earn three stars by meeting State proficiency requirements in a subject. Schools can earn up to two additional stars by performing exceptionally well compared to similar schools or by having exceptionally high scores. The first year a school does not meet AYP requirements; the school can only earn two stars. The second year a school fails to meet AYP, it is assigned one star.
